Model a Golden Jaguar Statueby Antti Lehtinen, Finland

This tutorial is designed for beginners who have some experience with 3DS MAX and Editable Poly object. In this tutorial you will create a jaguar statue using polygons. Finally you will create a gold material and a simple lighting setup for the statue.

    Modeling

Step 1: Create a Plane object in the Right view. Set Length and Width Segments of the Plane to 1 and convert the plane to Editable Poly. Move the vertices of the polygon according to picture below.

Step 2: Activate edge sub-object mode and create 5 new polygons by copying edges (move an edge while SHIFT key is pressed down) according to picture below.

Step 3: Add Symmetry modifier to the Editable Poly. Because of the Symmetry modifier the left side of the model is constructed automatically from now on. You still work on the right side of the model. The model should now look like in picture below.

Step 4: Create 5 new polygons by copying edges according to the picture below.

Step 5: Create 4 new polygons to the top of the head according to picture below.

Step 6: Create 12 new polygons according to picture below. The polygons we are creating define the side profile of the statue.

Step 7: Create 11 new polygons to the neck and jaw. Now the side profile of the jaguar head is defined. Modify the profile if necessary.

Step 8: Create 8 new polygons to the side of the head according to picture below. At some point you must use Target Weld in Editable Poly to weld edges or vertices together. There should never be double vertices or double edges in a 3D model. Now the side profile of the head is defined.

Step 9: Create 9 new polygons around the eye of the jaguar according to picture below. Use Target Weld when necessary. Remember to check the ******** of polygons from both Right and Front views.

Step 10: Create 9 new polygons around the ear of the jaguar according to picture below.

Step 11: Create more polygons around the ear of the jaguar.

Step 12: Create 11 new polygons according to picture below.

Step 13: Create 15 new polygons around the mouth of the jaguar according to picture below.

Step 14: Create 11 new polygons around the nose of the jaguar.

Step 15: Fill the hole in the nose with 3 four-sided polygons. The easiest way to create the new polygons is to use Create button in Editable Poly. Select three new polygons and use Editable Poly's Extrude function to create the nostril.

Step 16: Create 10 new polygons to finish the mouth of the jaguar according to picture below. Remember to use Target Weld to weld vertices together when necessary.

Step 17: Create 13 new polygons to fill the hole according to picture below.

Step 18: Activate Border sub-object mode and select the border of the eye. Create 8 new polygons by using Scale while SHIFT key is pressed down. Use Create button to create the rest of the polygons.

Step 19: Activate Border sub-object mode and select all the edges surrounding the hole of the ear. Create new polygons by copying the selected edges upwards.

Step 20: Repeat step 19. three times and place the new polygons according to picture below.

Step 21: Finish the ear of the jaguar by creating 9 new polygons.

Step 22: Finish the statue by creating base for it according to picture below. Or you could just create a body for the jaguar!

Step 23: In picture below you can see the complete model.

Step 24: Finalize the model and add Meshsmooth modifier to it. Set the Iterations value in Meshsmooth modifier to 2. The model should now look approximately like in picture below

Gold Material - We are going to create a simple gold material for the statue.

Step 25: Create a gold material for the model:
    • Select Standard material and change the shader from Blinn to Metal
    • Select RGB (203,189,114) as Ambient and Diffuse color
    • Set Specular Level to 80 and Glossiness to 60
    • Use Raytrace as Reflection map (Amount 40) and Noise as Bump Map (Amount 140)

    • Use REFMAP.GIF as Background map of the Raytrace
    • Set both U and V texture tiling of REFMAP.GIF to 2,0.

Modify the Noise according to picture below. Suitable value for Size depends on the size of your model so you might need to try different values.

Apply the material to your model and render the image. The rendered image should look like in picture below. Notice the reflections of REFMAP.gif and the effect of the Bump Map.

    Lighting

At the moment the scene uses the default lighting of 3DS MAX. Let's create a little more interesting lighting for the final rendering. Create four lights according to picture below.
    1. Key Light
This is Target Directional light and it's the main light source:
      Intensity: 0,8
      Shadows: On
    2. Fill Light
This is Omni light which illuminates important areas that the key light can't reach:
      Intensity: 0,4
    3. Back Light / Rim Light
This is Omni light which creates a rim of light to the right side of the model:
      Intensity: 0,6
    4. Back Light / Rim Light
This is Omni light which creates a rim of light to the left side of the model:
      Intensity: 0,6

Here is the final rendered image. Here you can read more about a three-point lighting setup
