    Painting in Digital Fusion

    Paint is a very powerful part of Digital Fusion. It will allow you to do things such as dust and scratch repairs, wire and rig removal, as well as just something creative. I will cover a few paint lessons over the next few weeks to show how paint can help you in your everyday compositing needs.

    For this lesson, I will demonstrate how to paint, and edit your strokes after the fact.

    Start with a new flow, and;
    1) Add a background tool, and add a paint tool [Pnt].

    Looking at the paint tool controls, you see 3 tabs. Controls, Brush, and Apply. You will also notice, that paint has automatically added a modifier to itself. This is a placeholder stroke, waiting for you to paint. If you open the stroke, you will see that it contains the same controls as the paint tool itself.

    The advantage of a vector based paint system (like Fusion) over a bitmap paint system (like Photoshop) is that strokes are changeable after they have been laid down.

    Lets start with just writing our name in the view.
    2) Make sure you are viewing the paint tool in the display.
    3) Under the paint controls, leave the controls and brush at the default, and open the ?Apply? tab. Here you can choose from one of several modes, but right now we are interested in the color mode. Now using the RGB sliders, select a color for your stroke.
    4) Now using one continuous motion write your name in the view using one stroke, and one stroke only. (Ignore crossing ?t?s? and dotting ?i?s.?)

    As you can see you now have your name in the view. Let?s modify the color of our stroke.
    5) Open the modifier tab, and select and open the ?Stroke 1? and then the ?Apply? tab. Now as you adjust the colors, it will update your stroke.

    Lets now animate it writing on. Now we could have done that before hand, but I?ll show you how to do it after the fact.
    6) Open the ?Stroke 1/Controls? and right click on the ?write on/end? and select ?set key creating bezier spline?.

    7) Set your current frame to 0
    8) Adjust the end value to 0.
    9) Go to frame 120 and set your end value to 1
    10) Now create a preview, and watch as your name is written on the screen.

    As you can see, this performs the task of writing your name on the screen, but doesn?t allow for control over the rate at which it was painted. Let?s now try to use the animate drop down in the paint and see the results we get with that.
    11) Add a second paint tool, and branch off from the background.

    <IMG src=http://ads.digitalmedianet.com/ads/servlet/view/banner/image/zone?zid=119&pid=0&keywords=compositing%2C+paintin g&position=1 hspace=0 vspace=0 border=0 alt=Click Here!>

    12) Open the main controls in the tools tab (not the modifier/stroke area). In the stroke animation drop down, select ?write on?.
    13) Go to frame 0
    14) Write your name again in the view, this time try to vary the speed at which you write your name.
    15) Open the spline editor and look at the animated spline on the paint tool. As you can see it reflects the speed at which you wrote your name. The flatter horizontal areas are slow action, where the steeper more vertical areas are faster action. Pay attention to what frame the last key is on, and set your render range accordingly.

    16) Create a preview.

    Now this allows you to time the painting of your name. You may have noticed that while writing fast, your curved areas have become more linear. Next I will show you how to edit a stroke, and smooth these areas out.
    17) Select your paint 2 tool in the flow area if it isn?t already.
    18) Open the modifiers tab, and select ?stroke 2/controls?
    19) Hit the ?make editable? button.

    This will turn your stroke from a paint option, to an editable polyline. Now you can select areas of the paint stroke and edit them just like any other polyline in Digital Fusion. Here you can go in and edit some of the ?clumps? of points down to 1 or 2, as well as smooth out some of the angular areas. Try the reduce points option under the polyline context menu as well.

    Next week we will look at color suppression.

    Keep on Fusioning
