    Modeling a Classic Wooden Table

    Final Result Preview

    Step 1

In the Top viewport, draw a shape with Line same as below picture. I always draw a rough shape and in the next step try to re-shape it .

    Step 2

Move vertices, add new vertices and change their type from Corner to Smooth and Bezier Corner to change its shape same as below picture.

    Step 3

In the Line parameters, select Spline sub-object mode and click on the your shape in the scene.

    Step 4

In the Line parameters, in the Mirror part, check Copy option and hit Mirror button. Now you have 2 shapes.

    Step 5

Move the new shape to right side and select the lines between 2 shapes and delete them. since we are going to connect these 2 shapes, we do not need any line between them.

    Step 6

Connect these 2 shapes by welding their vertices.

    Step 7

Select the new shape and again use Mirror to create its other side. this time chooseMirror Vertically from Mirror part.

    Step 8

Move down the new shape and select the lines between 2 shapes and delete them.

    Step 9

    Connect the vertices between them.

    Step 10

Use Fillet to expand vertices in the middle.

    Step 11

Add Extrude modifier with Amount of 10 to the shape.

    Step 12

Add Edit Poly modifier and select Edge sub-object mode.

    Step 13

Select one of the edges on the side of object and hit Ring button. Make sure all edges of the side are selected.

    Step 14

Click on the Connect Setting button and set its parameters to : Segments: 2, Pinch: 28, Slide: 70.

    Step 15

Select the new faces on the object same as below picture.

    Step 16

In the Edit Poly parameters, apply Extrude with Height of -1.2 and make sure it is set to Local Normal.

    Step 17

Select the edges at top and bottom of the object.

    Step 18

Click on the Chamfer Setting button and change its Amount to 0.3.

    Step 19

Select the middle edges and applith Amount of 0.1.

    Step 20

At the end you should have an object same as below picture. For this model, I tried to not use any smoothing modifier such as TurboSmooth. The main reason is its shape that if i want to apply TurboSmooth correctly, it needs more work on its top faces which is not necessary.

    Step 21

Create a Plane with Width and Length of 80 and 8 segments for both sides.

    Step 22

Right click on the Plane and convert t to Editable Mesh.

    Step 23

In Editable Mesh, select Edges sub-object mode and select all edges of the plane. Then in the Editable Mesh parameters, hit Visible button. Now the triangular edges are visible on the plane.

    Step 24

Right click on the Plane and this time convert it to Editable Poly.

    Step 25

Select vertical edges as shown in the below picture. Then hit the Remove button on the Editable Poly parameters.

    Step 26

Apply Bend modifier with Angle of 360 in X axis.

    Step 27

Apply Edit Poly and select the vertices where two side of plane meet. We need to connect these vertices so use the Weld button to join them.

    Step 28

There will be a line in that area. So select it and use Remove button.

    Step 29

Select the edges same as below picture.

    Step 30

Hold down Ctrl key and click on the Polygon button so faces in that area will be selected.

    Step 31

In the Edit Poly parameters, apply Extrude with Height of -1.5 and make sure it is set to Local Normal.

    Step 32

Now you can apply Turbosmooth to this object and resize it by FFD modifier. We need 5 more copy of this object that at end will make it.

    Step 33

Create a Cylinder which has 8 sides.

    Step 34

Use Extrude and Scale to re-shape it same as below picture. As you can see, I just extrude faces and scale them.

    Step 35

Select all horizontal edges and apply Chamfer with Amount of 0.05.

    Step 36

Now Select all vertical edges and apply Chamfer with Amount of 0.05.

    Step 37

Apply TurboSmooth to this object and position it under column of the table.

    Step 38

Create a shape same as below picture. You can use Line to create it. However I created a Rectangle shape and then modify it.

    Step 39

In the your shape parameters, select Spline sub-object mode and click on the your shape in the scene. Then in the Mirror part, check Copy option and hit Mirror button.

    Step 40

Move the new shape to right side and select the lines between 2 shapes and delete them. Connect these 2 shapes by welding their vertices.

    Step 41

Select the new shape and again use Mirror to create its other side. this time chooseMirror Vertically from Mirror part.

    Step 42

Move down the new shape and select the lines between 2 shapes and delete them.

    Step 43

Connect the vertices between them. now we do not need these vertices, so can remove them too.

    Step 44

Add Extrude modifier with Amount of 15 to the shape.

    Step 45

Since we will apply TurboSmooth at the end, we need to control the number of faces and also the connection between vertices. So back to the Editable Spline modifier, in the Interpolation rollout, reduce Steps to 2.

    Step 46

Apply Edit Poly on the top of the modify stack. Select all vertical edges of the object.

    Step 47

Click on the Connect Setting button and set its parameters to : Segments: 2, Pinch: 30, Slide: 0.

    Step 48

Select top edges of the object.

    Step 49

Apply Chamfer with Amount of 1 and Segments of 2.

    Step 50

Add a new line in the middle of the object by Connect tool. This line is just to divide out object to two equal part. at the end we will remove it.

    Step 51

Go to the Hierarchy Panel, active Affect Pivot Only and click on Center to Objectbutton. deactive Affect Pivot Only before move to next step.

    Step 52

Apply Symmetry modifier and choose Z from its parameters. So we no need to change the bottom side of object. just mirror the top to bottom.

    Step 53

Convert the object to Editable Poly. Select the top polygon and delete it.

    Step 54

Select the edges which i have shown in the below picture. from both left and right side of the object.

    Step 55

Click on the Bridge button on the Editable Poly parameters. we do not need to change it setting and just hit OK. you can see that edges of two sides are connected now.

    Step 56

Select the 2 holes in the left and right side of object. Hit Cap button in the Editable Poly parameters to fill them.

    Step 57

Now select the middle line which we created in step 50. We do not need it any more so can remove it.

    Step 58

Select the middle polygons and apply Extrude with Height of -2.3 and make sure it is set to Local Normal.

    Step 59

Select the edges around of middle faces and apply Chamfer with Amount of 0.2 and Segments of 2.

    Step 60

Now select edges of 4 corner of the object and apply Chamfer with Amount of 0.2 and Segments of 2.

    Step 61

Model already finished and we can apply TurboSmooth. After applying TurboSmooth modifier you will find that some faces have problem. The reason is because there are some polygons with more than 4 faces. So we need to divide them.

    Step 62

Back to Editable Poly. In the corner you can see a vertex which is just connect to 2 other vertices. we need to use Cut tools to connect it to another size of object.

    Step 63

Select Vertex sub-object mode and use Cut tools to make new polygons.

    Step 64

Continue this line until reach another side of object.

    Step 65

Now the Classic table model is almost ready. We just need to add a nice Ornament shape. I will try to use a easy way to create it.

    Step 66

First we need an ornament or border picture. I used the Photoshop default shapes to create this. you can search and find other types. just pay attention that your shape should be white and other sides should be black.

    Step 67

Create a Plane. The size of this plane is depend on your pictures size. But whatever is its size. you need to use the same aspect for its segments to have square shape faces. For example here the Length and Width is 60 x 120 and I used the same numbers for their segments.

    Step 68

Apply Displace Modifier to Plane. Add your picture to the Map Slot and increaseStrength to 5. Here it is important to change the Blur value too. I used 0.3 for my picture. you can apply TurboSmooth with Iterations of 1 to have a smoother result.

    Step 69

Convert this object to Editable Poly. I used Symmetry to create another side of this ornament. You can skip this step it your ornament shape is already a complete one.

    Step 70

Resize and put the ornament object in the right place on the table.

    Step 71

Use Bend modifier to align its base face to the curve shape of the table. Make sure the base part of ornament object is inside the table model and you just can see the displaced part.

    Step 72

Now if you give them a similar material, they will look as one object.
