    How to model a HTC Tattoo, android phone, with 3ds Max




    0.35cm. After that convert the Box to Editable Poly by right clicking on the screen and selecting Convert to> Convert to Editable Poly. Note: Press “V” to switch between viewports.
    Step 2: In the Modify tab select the Edge selection mode and select the top 2 edges. Click the box next to chamfer, change the chamfer amount to 1.3 and the Segments to 24. Click OK.
    Step 3: Now select the bottom edge and chamfer them with an amount of 2.3 and 36 Segments.
    Step 4: Go to Polygons selection mode, select the front polygon and Bevel it with a Height of 0.35cm an the Outline of -0.2cm.
    Note: Press F3 to turn On/Off the Wireframe View Toggle. Press F4 View Edge Faces Toggle.
    Step 5: Go back to Edge selection mode and make a ring selection of the edges you see below. Select only one edge and click on Ring. Connect the with 1 segment and a Slide of 70.
    Step 6: Now select the edge resulted from connect and Chamfer it with 2 Segments and 0.025cm amount.
    Note: Press Alt+X to see trough.
    Step 7: Select one edge and click on Ring to make a ring selection. Now hold down CTRL and click on the Polygons icon to convert the selection.
    Step 8: With the polygons resulted from converting the edges selected, Inset them with an amount of 0.01cm.
    Step 9: Extrude the polygons with an amount of -0.025cm and change the Type to Local Normal. After that delete the polygons by pressing Delete on your keyboard.
    Step 10: Make a Loop selection by selection one edge and clicking on Loop. Chamfer the edges with an amount of 0.01cm and 4 Segments.
    Step 11: Go to Element selection mode, select the front element and click on Detach to detach the element, change the name to Front_Side and press OK to finish.
    Step 12: Right click on the screen and click on Hide Unselected to hide everything else except the Front_Side.
    Note: Hide Selection will hide the object you have selected, Unhide All unhides hidden objects and Unhide by name give you the option to select witch object to unhide.
    Step 13: Inset the Front polygon with an amount of 0.05cm.
    Step 14: Make a loop selection and chamfer the edges with an amount of 0.02cm and 4 Segments.
    Step 15: In Edge selection mode using the Cut tool create 4 new Edges.
    Step 16: Select the 4 new created edge and Connect the with 2 Segments and a Pinch of 95.
    Step 17: Select the polygon resulted from connecting the edges and Extrude it with an amount of -0.1cm.
    Step 18: Go to Edge selection mode and select on corner edge, click on Ring to make a Ring selection, you will now have 4 edges selected.
    Step 19: Chamfer the previously selected edge with an amount of 0.125cm and 12 segments.
    Step 20: Select the inner polygon and Detach it. Name it Display_Screen.
    Step 21: Press “H” or click on Select from Scene, select the Display_Screen and click OK.
    Step 22: With the Display_Screen selected right click on the screen and select Clone. Change the Object to Copy and the first Clone Glass_Screen and click OK. Do this again only this time the the new created Clone Black_Screen. You will now have 3 objects.
    Note: Press ALT+Q to Enter Isolation Mode. Doing this will only show you selected object. Click on Exit Isolation Mode to go back.
    Step 23: Apply to the Glass_Screen a Shell modifier from the Modifier list and change the Outer amount to 0.075cm. Now for the Black_Screen first use the Cut tool to create some new edges like you see below, Delete the middle Polygon and apply a Shell modifier as well only change the Outer Amount to 0.01cm. Don’t do anything to the Display_Screen.
    Step 24: In the Modify tab next to the objects name you can see a little colored square. Apply a different color to to Glass, Black and Display. Using the Select and Move tool arrange the Objects like you see in the next image.
    Step 25: Enter Isolation Mode(ALB+Q) with Glass_Screen. Select the Front and the Back polygons and Inset the with an amount of 0.05cm.
    Step 26: Make a loop selection of the outer edges and Chamfer them with an amount of 0.008cm and 2 Segments.
    Step 27: Select the Front_Side and Hide everything else(Hide Unselected). Go to Create and Shapes. Uncheck the Box for Start New Shape. Create 5 Rectangles with different Length and Width like you see below, also change the Corner Radius to fit the image, and 1 Circle for the middle round button. Change the Interpolation Steps to 12.
    Step 28: Add a Extrude modifier to our spline and change the Amount to 0.25cm. Using the Select and Move tool position our spline like you see below.
    Step 29: Select the Front_Side and go to Create, Geometry, Compound Objects and select ProBoolea, click on Start Picking and click on the Extruded Spline.
    Step 30: Select the 4 inner polygons and Inset them with an amount of 0.005cm.
    Step 31: Now Extrude the same polygons with an amount of 0.2cm.

    Step 32: Inset the Polygons with an amount of 0.05cm.
    Step 33: Make a loop selection of the outer edges and Chamfer them with an amount of 0.015cm and 4 Segments.
    Step 34: Now select the inner polygon for the round button, click on Grow to grow the selection and press Delete on you keyboard to delete them.
    Step 35: Go to Border selection mode, select the border for the round button and click on Cap.

    Step 36: Select the polygon resulted from capping the Border. First Apply and Inset with an amount of 0.02cm, click OK and second apply a Extrude with an amount of -0.2cm, third apply an Inset again with an amount of 0.01cm and last apply an Extrude with an amount of 0.25cm.
    Step 37: First apply an Inset with an amount of 0.025cm. Second apply a Bevel with a Height amount of -0.075cm and Outline amount of -0.1cm. Third apply an Inset with an amount of 0.015cm and finally apply an Inset with an amount of 0.05cm.
    Step 38: Select the polygons you see selected below and Extrude them with an amount of -0.25cm.
    Note: To select the polygons more easy first in edge selection mode make a ring selection and holding down CTRL click on Polygon icon to convert the selection.
    Step 39: Make a Ring selection of the Edges and connect the with 1 Segment.
    Step 40: With the edges resulted from Connect selected use the Select and Move tool to move the edges in Y axis direction.
    Step 41: Chamfer the same edges with an amount of 0.04cm and 6 Segments.
    Step 42: Make a Loop selection of the edges you see below selected. Chamfer them with an amount of 0.02cm and 6 Segments.
    Step 43: Select the Inner polygon, click the box next to Inset, change the amount to 0.05cm and click Apply 11 times, after that click OK.
    Step 44: With the last polygon resulted from inset selected hold down CTRL and click on the Vertex icon to convert the selection.
    Step 45: With the vertices resulted form converting the polygons selected click on the box next to Weld and change the amount to a higher number until you see all vertices snap together, in this case I’ve used 0.025cm.
    Step 46: Select the middle Vertex, in the Soft Selection rollout menu check the box Use Soft Selection, change the Falloff amount to 0.65cm and the Bubble to 1.5. Using the Select and Move tool move the vertex in the Y axis direction about -0.05cm to create a bump.
    Step 47: Make 2 Loop selection of the edges you see selected below. Apply a Chamfer amount of 0.035cm an 6 Segments.
    Step 48: Make another Loop selection of the following edges and first Chamfer them with an amount of 0.015cm and 1 segment and second Chamfer them again with an amount of 0.002cm and 1 segment.
    Step 49: Now we will create the grill for the speaker. From Create, Shape selected the NGon and create one with the Radius of 0.025cm and 6 Sides.
    Step 50: Convert the NGon the Editable Spline by right clicking on it and selection Convert to > Convert to Editable Spline. From Selection rollout menu select Spline. Select the NGon and using the Select and Move toll make about 190 clones holding down SHIFT.
    Step 51: Convert the Editable Spline to Editable Poly. Go in Vertex selection mode an press CTRL+A to select all the vertices. Click on the box next to Weld, change the amount to 0.005cm and click OK.
    Step 52: Go in Polygon selection mode and press CTRL+A to select all the polygons. Inset the with an amount of 0.007cm and change the Inset type to By Polygon. After that press Delete to Delete the inset polygons.
    Step 53: Add a Shell modifier from the Modifier list and change the Outer Amount to 0.005cm. Using the Select and Move tool position the Grill like you see below.
    Step 54: Right click on the screen and select Unhide All.
    Step 55: Now select the Object you see selected below and Hide Unselected.
    Step 56: Change the selection name to Back_side, go in Polygon selection mode and select the back polygon. First Extrude it with an amount of 0.7cm click OK and Inset the Polygon with an amount of 0.55cm.
    Step 57: Make a Loop selection of the Edges and Chamfer the with an amount of 0.5cm and 18 Segments.
    Step 58: Select the 2 highlighted edges and click on Loop. Hold CTRL and click Remove to Remove the. Holding down CTRL will remove the vertices also.
    Step 59: With the vertices you see selected below selected apply a FDD 2x2x2 modifier. Click the plus sign next to the modifier to expend it and select the Control Points. Select the control points on the right and move the to the right in the X axis direction about 0.195cm.
    Step 60: Right click on the Modifier and click on Collapse to… In the pop-up window click on YES. You can also do this more easy by converting the selection again to Editable Poly.
    Step 61: Select the 3 edges you see selected below and Connect them with 2 Segments, a Pinch of 3 and a Slide of -85.
    Step 62: Make a Ring selection of the Edges and Connect the with 1 Segments and a Slide of -50.
    Step 63: Select the Polygon and Delete it

    Step 64: Select the polygon and Extrude it with an amount of -0.2cm.
    Step 65: Delete the side Polygons, not the one we just extruded.
    Step 66: Chamfer the 2 corner edges with an amount of 0.15cm and 8 Segments.
    Step 67: Select the polygon and first Inset it with an amount of 0.01cm and second Extrude it with an amount of 0.25cm.
    Step 68: Inset polygon with an amount of 0.025cm.
    Step 69: Make a loop selection of the edge you see below and Chamfer them with an amount of 0.02cm and 6 Segments.
    Step 70: In the Back viewport create a Cylinder with a Radius of 0.7cm and a Height of -0.2cm. Change the Height and Cap Segments to 1 and the Sides to 64. Using the Select and Move tool position the Cylinder like you see below.
    Step 71: Convert the Cylinder to Editable Poly and go in Vertex selection mode. Using the Select and Move tool move the vertices like you see below.
    Step 72: Select the Back_Side and go to Create, Geometry, Compound Objects, select Proboolean, click on Start Picking and click on the Cylinder.
    Step 73: Convert the selection to Editable Poly, in Polygon selection mode select the polygons you see selected below and Delete them.
    Step 74: Go in Border selection mode, select the border and click on Cap.
    Step 75: Select the capped polygon and first Inset it with an amount of 0.1cm and second Bevel the polygon with a Height amount of 0.075cm and an Outline amount of -0.075cm.
    Step 76: Make a Loop selection of the edges and Chamfer them with an amount of 0.095cm and 12 Sides.
    Step 77: To clean up the mesh a little bit select the edge you see highlighted, hold down CTRL and click Remove.
    Step 79: Select the polygon and Inset it with an amount of 0.025cm.
    Step 80: Detach the selected polygon and name it Camera.
    Step 81: Hit Alb+Q with the Camera selected to go into Isolation Mode. Select the camera polygon and Bevel it with the Height amount of 0.025cm and an Outline amount of -0.025cm.
    Step 82: Inset the same polygon with an amount of 0.15cm.
    Step 83: Bevel the polygon with the Height amount of -0.025 and the Outline amount of -0.025cm.
    Step 84: In Vertex selection mode using the Select and Move tool move the half bottom vertices up to form a circle.
    Step 85: Select the middle polygon, Detach it and name it Camera Glass.
    Step 86: Inset the Camera Glass polygon with an amount of 0.025cm and after that apply a Shell modifier with the Inner amount of 0.01cm.
    Step 87: Make a loop selection of the outer edges and Chamfer them with an amount of 0.005cm and 3 Segments.
    Step 88: Apply a Shell Modifier to the Camera Frame also with an amount of 0.015cm. Convert the Camera frame to Editable Poly.
    Step 89: Make 3 edge loop selections and chamfer them with an amount of 0.002cm and 1 Segments.
    Step 90: Exit Isolation mode and Unhide all the Objects. Select the Back_Side and using the Connect or the Cut tool create the edges you see selected below.
    Step 91: Select the Polygon and Extrude it with an amount of -0.25. After that Delete the polygon.
    Step 92: Select 3 corner edges and chamfer them with an amount of 0.05cm and 6 Segments.
    Step 93: Select the remaining corner edge and Chamfer it with the amount of 0.1cm and 1 Segment.
    Step 94: Using the Cut tool create the edges you see highlighted below.
    Step 95: Select the 2 edges I’ve selected and Chamfer them with an amount of 0.03cm and 6cm.
    Step 96: Select the inner polygons of the charger hole and Detach them. Check the box for Detach as Clone and click OK.
    Step 97: Select the newly Detach object and add a Shell modifier to it. Change the Outer Amount to 0.02cm. Now use the Select and Scale tool and scale down the object just a little bit.
    Step 98: Convert the object to Editable Poly or Collapse the modifier. Make a Loop selection of the edges and Chamfer the with an amount of 0.009 and 6 Segments.
    Step 99: Create a new Box and position it like you see below. Change the Length to 0.03cm, the Width to 0.5cm and the Height to 0.5cm. Change the Length and Height Segments to 1 and Width Segments to 11.

    Step 100: Alt+Q for Isolation Mode, convert the box to Editable Poly, Select every other Polygon, first Inset them with a small amount and after that Extrude them.
    Step 101: It’s now time to assign VRay as our primary rendering engine. Click on Rendering first and after that click on Render Setup(F10 shortcut key). Click on Common tab, click the 3 dots next to Production: Default Scanline Renderer, chose Vray and click OK.
    Step 102: Press M or click on Material Editor on the main tool bar to open it. Select the first material, click on Standard to change it and chose VRayMtl. Click OK.
    Step 103: Select all the objects from scene, CTRL+A, and apply the newly created material to selection. First click on Show Standard Map in Viewport and second click on Assign material to Selection.
    Step 104: From Create, Geometry create a new Plan with the Length of 40cm and the Width of 80cm. Change the Length and Width segments to 1. Convert the Plane to Editable Poly.
    Step 105: In edge selection mode using the Select and Move tool hold down SHIFT and copy the back edge 3 times. First Up, second forward, third forward-down.
    Step 106: Select the 3 edges I’ve selected and Chamfer them with an amount of 3.0cm and 6 Sides.
    Step 107: From the Modifier list add a Turbosmooth modifier and apply the VrayMtl to the plane as well.
    Step 108: From Create, Lights, Vray, create 2 VRay lights, one on the right and one on the left. Check the Invisible box for both of the and also change the Subdivs number to 16. Change the Multiplier for the light on the right to 12 and the color a light yellow. Change the multiplier for the left light to 6 and the color to a light blue.
    Step 109: From Create, Camera create a Target camera and position it like you see below. Press “C” to go in Camera view and position your image as you wish.
    Step 110: Press F10 or go to Render Setup in Rendering tab and change the setting as you see below. Remember to check the box for “Show Calc. Phase” in Light Cache rollout menu because it’s not visible in the print screen.
    Step 111: Select the Back_Side and Attach it to the Front_side.
    Step 112: Select the following edges and Connect them with 32 Segments.
    Step 113: With the vertices you see below selected, add an FDD 3x3x3 modifier, go in Control Points, select the top control points and in Left viewport using the Select and move tool move them to the left. Now select only the middle top control points and move them a little bit more to the left. We did this to create the Curve that the phones has.
    Step 114: Convert the selection to Editable Poly, select the bottom vertices you see selected bellow and apply another FDD 3x3x3 modifier. In the Right viewport(“V” to change between viewports) move the bottom left control point to the right. Guide your self by the image below.
    Step 115: Now select the charger frame and inside box, and using the Select and Move tool and Select and Scale tool position it to fit the hole.
    Step 116: From the Modifier list add a Smooth modifier and check the box for Auto Smooth. Add this modifier to all of our objects that need smoothing.
    Step 117: Open Material Editor(shortcut key “M”), select the second material and change it to VRayMtl, change the settings like you see below. Apply it to the main part of the phone.

    Step 118: Select the third material and change it to VRayMtl, change the settings like you see below. Select the buttons polygons and apply the material to them.
    Step 119: Select the fourth material and change it to VRayMtl, change the settings like you see below. Apply this material to the Glass_Screen.
    Step 120: Select the fifth material and change it to VRayMtl, change the settings like you see below. Apply this material to Black_Screen.
    Step 121: Select the sixth material only this time change it to a VRayLightMtl. Change multiplier to 2, click on none and select Bitmap, open this Bitmap(click to open).
    Step 122: Select the Display screen, click Show Standard map in Viewport and Apply the material to selection. Add an UVW Map modifier from the modifier list. Change the Length and Width to FIT the screen. Also move the modifiers Gizmo a little bit up.
    Step 123: We will not create texture for the button, we will actually model the text and logos. So, form Create, Shapes using the Line, the Ngon and the Text tools create some shapes like you see below.
    Step 124: Add an Extrude modifier with the amount of 0.01cm and convert the selection to Editable Poly.
    Step 125: Create three more VRayMtl. Only change the Diffuse color, one black, one red and one Green and apply them as you see below.
    Step 126: Use the Select and Move tool and Select and Rotate tool to arrange the scene like you see below. Rotate the phone 90 degrees.
    Step 127: Add a new Vray light, change the multiplier to 3. white or light yellow as color, check the box for invisible and position it like you see below to add some reflection to the glass.
    Step 128: This is it. Well done. Don’t hold back and start experimenting with the scene, the lights, the materials to achieve your one personal result. Our final result:
